So You Think You Can Dance - Miami and Mephis Auditions!

Hello all...

I know Kim prefers a more overall approach for blogging on the auditions, but I tend to be a details person by nature, so that's what you get!

We started the auditions in Miami tonight with judges Nigel and Mary along with Tyce D'orio (is it D'Orio, D'orio, Diorio? I looked it up, but got conflicting results) - and wow, one thing that boy will never be accused of is filtering his opinions - between his facial expressions and his 'critiques' he had me laughing through most of the first hour with his brutal honesty...

So the show started off with a real treat... a guy with an impossibly long name, but for simplicity's sake, he just goes by Tony... and he dances... Tony-style. Right off the bat I was concerned when he said when he dances he can be 'as kinky as he wants to...' (that's never a good sign) and he can go for 5 or 6 hours without even getting tired! Like we all haven't heard that before! Wow. Except... by the time they brought out the ventilator after his 2 minute 'performance', I was thinking he may have over reached. Among other things, Tyce said he was 'horrifyingly bad, as in, flush you like a public toilet bad!' And then a few other descriptors as to just how bad... Tyce, honey, you have to learn to let it out and just express yourself...

Fortunately, this was not a sign of things to come... next up was Priscella Marrero, who I thought was just great - she went straight through to Vegas. As did a returning couple Janette Manrara and Romulo Villeverde, who did a tremendous salsa.

Twins Jessica and Jennifer are next. They are so bad (Nigel calls them a nightmare) that it prompts about a 45 second montage of Tyce's rants... it was fantastic!

We move on to Joseph Smith, who has great musicality and performs quite a number - he gets put right through to Vegas, which I agree with, but can't help but think he would be a real handful if he made it to the Top 20.

We finish Day 1 in Miami with tapper Erik 'Silky' Moore - and knowing how much Nigel loves a good tap (ummm... tap DANCE) I predict the guy walks off with a ticket in hand. Yup.

Next up is Paris Torres from Seattle, who dances to a cracked up version of Toxic by Britney Spears. I really liked her and am not surprised at the Vegas verdict.

Wow - look at that headpiece! Geo Smith does quite the African performance, and at one point Mary thinks he's going to go right up her dress - 'tickle her fancy', as Nigel says. I laughed when, in her excitement, she gave Nigel a scratch on the arm. They put Geo into choreography and then on to Vegas.

Following a bit of a tear jerker montage about being a young widow, Talia Rickards dances to a neat version of The Tide is High... I thought she should go through to choreography, which she did, but I wasn't entirely sure if she should make it to Vegas, which she did.

All in all, 32 dancers from the Miami area will be leaving on a jet plane to see if they can make the Top 20.

In Memphis, Lil C joins them at the judges table. I really like Lil' C. He's not at all what you would expect from a first impression.

Marico Flake (who daylights as a cop) wows them right off the top and goes straight through to Vegas.

Yeesh - who's this guy claiming to be cousins with someone from The Backstreet Boys. Dustin Dorough 'dances' to Lady Gaga. That is almost all I need to say. Nigel feels he needs to add more by saying he's delusional.

Oh! The 'You're Rude.' - 'No, YOU'RE Rude' guy we've been seeing on all the ads! I've been looking forward to him. Hey, and guess what! He's rude. So rude, in fact, that it prompts Cat to run through the "Guide to a Good Audition"...

1) Start with your best move
2) Come dressed to impress
3) Connect with the judges
4) Always follow directions (which ends with a guy being told to dance more at the front of the stage, and in is angst to follow Rule #4, he tumbles right off... tee hee!)

Now this girl I like, and am giving her my vote for Top 20. Caitlyn Kinney (her sister Meagan made it through in Miami - and thanks editors for not showing us any of her audition! What is that about?) is just lovely. Beautiful lines, beautiful expression and movement... the judges eat her up, with Mary telling her it is her destiny.

Anna Dunn from Jackson performs next, and while I think she might be good, she is kind of... flail-y... or more professionally put by Nigel, 'over choreographed'. Lil C makes her cry (not in a Tyce kind of way) when he speaks to her about the death of her father, and I am glad when she goes through choreography and then to Vegas.

Travis Prokop is kind of interesting - he's the guy who has the football coach dad - his dance is pretty good, and the major feedback is that he has to work on his strength. I thought it was cool when Nigel applauded his father for letting him be his own person by pursuing dance and not following in his football footsteps. After choreography, it's Vegas for him too.

Travis Kaspraszk (sp?) auditioned last year, and is back again with a Gene Kelly style dance, which is just fantastic. His brother Brian (who is up to audition in a little bit) choreographed it for him, and it really is very good. I'm glad he made it through.

Brian is up next, and he does a tap number that is very entertaining. Personality plus. Nigel says choreography, but Mary and Lil C outnumber him and send him off to Vegas with his brother. That's bound to be a heart breaker down the road.

The next twins don't look quite as frightening as the ones from Miami - Lauren and Lydia (didn't catch their last name)... they both get put through to choreography and then there's a moment when it looks like only one of them will make it through, but no, phew, they're both in...

A note on choreography - try as I might, I never saw Lauren! When it was Blake for Canada, we saw tons of him in the choreography segment, but Lauren not so much - I was a bit disappointed.

Overall a good show, and I am really looking forward to next week (I'm not sure what day it is on, but Kim will, with her being all-knowing and everything. It's really good that you recognize that.) - Los Angeles and Seattle, with Seattle looking like it's really going to showcase the West Coast oddballs...! Fun!

See you there!
