It's Finale Night - And the Winner Is...!!!!

Well here we are, the last episode of Season 5. I'm still hoping for Brandon to come out triumphant, but I have a nagging feeling I will be disappointed... Let's go find out!

The night opens with the Top 20 performance danced to A Brand New Day from The Wiz soundtrack. Tonight is going to be everything we've seen before and loved, so not really a night for critiquing, as it's all been said.

We learn that last nights show received a record breaking 21.6 million votes, and a total of 1/4 billion votes for the whole season (I think they meant all seasons combined). Wow - that's impressive! I think in Canada we broke 3 million on finale night...

We've got everyone on the panel tonight - L'il C, Mia, Tyce, Debbie, Adam, Mary (decked out in 'diamonds') and Nigel, who flashes something on his cuff to Cat, but I didn't quite catch what. They were diamond cufflinks - Cat said something like "oh for you too huh?" to Nigel.

A quick recap of all the auditions, and I have to say it still kills me to see Natalie get cut. Would have been a whole different season if that one thing turned out differently, in my opinion. I totally agree.

After a review of last nights performances, the judges get to pick their favorite routines of the season, and first up is Adam picking an early hip hop number choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon. Dancing to Mad by Ne-Yo are Jeanine and Phillip.... oh, it's so nice to see him again, I really did enjoy him.

Nigel picks the next one, an Argentine Tango performed by Brandon and Janette to Libertango from Forever Tango. I'd forgotten about this one... It's good.

Debbie asks to see Asuka and Vitolio dance the Viennese Waltz again. They indulge her, of course, and this really is a lovely number danced to Dreams are More Precious by Enya. I did forget how overwrought Asuka looks at the end though. A little overdone.

Couldn't find it to download for some reason, but while I was searching I found this one from last season, and it was so lovely that I thought I'd put it in anyway...

Ahhh. I think this one was my favorite dance of the season.... Thanks, Mary, for choosing the contemporary piece by Travis that was just incredible.... Jeanine and Jason dance to Jason Mraz's If It Kills Me (which I listen to about a hundred times a day now)... Beautiful. I think the lighting was off for this one. It was too dark the whole way through and hard to make stuff out. Still love it though.

They take a quick break from the repeats and Cat does a quick check with the audience to see who they scream loudest for... Brandon and Jeanine are clearly in the lead as the favorites.

Now it's Mia's turn to pick... Will she chose something from Brandon? Nope. She picks an early one from Kayla and Max, a samba danced to Jum Bah Day by House of Gypsies. Kayla freakin' rocked this one.

We take a moment to learn about a special night out for the Top 4... it's a surprise, and they have no idea where they are off to, they just know they get to go in a limo, which makes them pretty happy. Hey! It's Kherington from Season 4! Oh! They get a private viewing of Fame! which opens in September... and I admit it, I'll be there for that one... Maybe not on the opening weekend (yeah right!), but I'm in for sure!

Back to the repeats and Debbie gets to pick another one... it's the Top 16 group number danced to I Know You Want Me by Pitbull. I don't think I saw this one originally, I like it!

Now we are bringing in the winner from SYTYCD Australia to perform for us... dare I hope that they might bring in our Canadian winner? How great would THAT be! Talia someone (didn't catch her last name, sorry) gets a piece choreographed by Sonya Tayeh, and I'm loving the song - Shot You Down by the Audio Bullys... I think this dance is one that Kim would like...

It's L'il C's turn to get his favorite number performed and he picks Caitlyn and Jason's Bollywood piece danced to Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire. Why, you ask? Well, he's going to break it down for us nice and slow. "Any time you're blessed to be aboard a vessel that facilitates education of world dance to mass public is a victory" for him. I actually rewound about 4 times to catch all that properly. I love the things that come out of his mouth, I truly do. *shaking head* He's cute but...seriously?

Oh! I think we are finally getting to some results....! Yes, someone is about to get cut.... And the first to do, the dancer in 4th place, is Kayla. She holds it together perfectly as we watch her montage, and says her favorite thing was working with all the choreographers, Mia in particular. And we are left with 3. The way Adam cheers for her at various points during the show, I don't think this is the last we'll see of Kayla. He's clearly a fan and has the ability to cast her in movies. I'd say she's set.

Some more season favorites. Oh yay! Adam picks Randi and Evan's Butt Dance (it just feels like it should be capitalized) and I'm happy because I still haven't seen this one. They dance to Koop Island Blues by Koop featuring Ane Brune, and it really is great. I now understand what all the fuss was about. This is one I watch again and again...makes me smile every time. I love French jazz style music.

And another good one! Mary picks last nights Paso Doble performed by Jeanine and Brandon and danced to Tetsujin from the Matrix Revolution soundtrack. Lots of soundtracks this year... I don't think I had noticed that until just now. This is just a fantastic dance, so strong and powerful...

On to some more results! We cut straight to it and the time has come for Evan to leave us. The fact that he made it this far through is incredible, and I hope we see him again somewhere down the line... Cat says she wants to see some of his best bits, and I hope she means his montage... Yes, she does... phew! She asks him if he's going to keep dancing, and I think it would be great if he said "nah... I'm pretty much done now. I see the Oasis is hiring, and let me tell you, if you can get yourself a job there..." But no, he says "Heck yeah!"

It's time for Nigel to pick another one, but before he does, he says his favorite moment of the season was when Mary admitted to having Botox. And then she beats the crap out of him.

After she's done, Nigel picks Mia's addiction piece with Kayla and Kupono danced to Gravity by Sara Bareilles, and this one is just as powerful as it was the first time around. Even Mia is weepy afterwards. I was weepy as well - I determined that this was my favourite piece of the whole season. I re-watched it several times last night alone. My favourite also. Choked me up this time, even before seeing Shankers cry.

Back by popular demand are The Rage Boys Crew dancing to Feel by Colby O'Donis. I wonder if they'll be bringing Katie back too, I mean, if it's by popular demand and all...

Tasty Oreo gets to pick his favorite now, and he wants disco. A number choreographed by Doriana Sanchez, performed by Janette and Brandon and danced to Loving is Really My Game by Brainstorm. This was such a great routine, I'm happy to see it again.

And for the last repeat performance, and we had to know it was coming, the cancer piece choreographed by Tyce and danced by Melissa and Ade. Before they dance we learn that the person Tyce choreographed this piece for found out just today that they are cancer free. That's cool. Really, though, do you buy it that this person 'just found out today'? I mean regardless, it's great, good news, everyone should be pleased. But it also makes for a convenient feel good moment for the show if she 'just found out today'.

Oh wait, one more group number... but wait... where are the judges? Where on earth could they be?

The Top 8 dance to One from A Chorus Line - this is the one that tripped me out originally with all the mirrors, making me think there were about 64 dancers on the stage... Oh! And there they are, those sneaky judges, doing a chorus line of their own... Good for them, never saw it coming...

Okay. Here we go, the moment of truth. Oh but wait, we need to do a montage for both Jeanine and Brandon before we get the final verdict. Way to prolong the agony for them... I'm still hoping for Brandon, but thinking Jeanine... and yes, indeed, America's Favorite Dancer and a girl a quarter of a million dollars richer... Jeanine is the winner. They have clearly reformatted the final minutes of the show, say from Season 3... Anyone remember that, when Sabra won? It went something like.... "And the winner is.... Sabra! Good night!" And suddenly we're thrown into the middle of a CSI Miami episode.

They've obviously learned from that, and Jeanine is given a good amount of time to thank the academy and her mother...

I admit to feeling a touch... disappointed. However, she was a worthy dancer and it will be interesting to see if we ever hear from her again. I just... really loved Brandon. I was happy with this outcome - Brandon is an Amazing dancer, but Jeanine's personality stole the show for me. She had the whole package - versatile dance ability and shiny personality. This was the best choice for me. So pleased with Jeanine. Wednesday night's performances proved she wanted it.

With Season 5 behind us, join us next week for a Season 2 of SYTYCD Canada, which starts on Tuesday... wow, no rest for the wicked around here! So Excited! This new obsession is VERY enjoyable. See you Tuesday!

See you then!
