SYTYCDC - Top 16 Performance!

Evening possums! Sorry for the lateness of this post. I had to wait for the jackhammering to stop (don’t ask) before I could sit in peace and watch and blog.

Before we get started with the SYTYCD Canada recap, did anyone catch the season premiere of The Ellen Degeneres show today? Our Season 5 SYTYCD US Top 10 made a special appearance at the end of the show. If you missed it, here it is! I (Carly) did miss it ...but wow! FUN!

Alright, business at hand. Where are we now? Top 16 right? For some reason it feels like we should be farther along!

Joining Jean Marc and Tre on the judging panel this week are Sean Cheesman and Melissa Williams (who looks killer tonight by the way ~Except for the HUGE earrings which I think are ridiculous and call to mind a quote from Walter on Fringe "I believe with proper demodulation, you could receive satellite television for free". Leah (who looks smokin' in that dress) says we’ve got a hot show ahead of us, so let’s get to it!

First up we’ve got Kim and Emanuel. They’ve pulled Jazz with Blake this week. It’s about a magician and his assistant, who assists him with love, sex and magic. Blake is a dirty, dirty beast....I love it.

They’re dancing to ‘Love, Sex, Magic’ by Ciara featuring Justin Timberlake. Great costuming and make up right off the bat. I’m totally buying this from them. They’re both fully into it and rockin’ it hard. Blake’s worked some minor illusions into it that work really well and - Christ! - Kim ends up in her underwear! Ha! All in all, great piece. Well done. I hate to admit this but Emanuel is really winning me over - I was SO ready to hate him. This routine was awesome.

The judges are on their feet and Leah’s yelling ‘SHE LOST HER CLOTHES!’ Ha! Sean’s in love with this piece. Kim’s making him blush. He’s a huge fan of Emanuel’s too. Melissa is amazed with everything about this piece. Tre says Kim was beyond expectations and Emanuel was meant to dance. She’s doing some testifying here! Jean Marc praises the choreography and the dancing. He says they were totally committed. Then he says ‘Easy oodini!’! Ha!

Back from the break, oh goodie. We get to do background on the judges too! Filler. Moving on.

Amy and Vincent are up next with Hip Hop. We’ve got a new choreographer this week: FLii Stylz. This looks like it’s going to have a lot of intricate movements.

Dancing to ‘Boom Boom Pow’ by the Black Eyed Peas, Amy and Vincent seem to have gotten a handle on all the little movements. Amy’s perhaps a little stronger than Vincent. This is definitely fast paced and clearly a challenging routine. It - to me at least - was really well executed. Loved this one - even though I can't handle BEP

Sean says they made it their own and that they worked it. Melissa’s a huge fan of them, and says they didn’t disappoint this week. She says it could’ve been hit a bit harder, but they did well. Tre loved it. There were elements that needed some work but they both did it well. Jean Marc calls it fast and furious. He says Amy has a lot of funk in that little trunk. Hee. Vincent had plenty of fly style. I love it when Jean Marc tries to be hip.

Up next are Austin and Corynne. They’ve drawn Contemporary with Stacey Tookey. It’s about the end of a relationship and the reluctance to move on. It looks like a very physical piece.

They’re dancing to ‘Never Say Never’ by The Fray. Okay does The Fray have some sort of deal with SYTYCD? There's always at least one, if not more, routine using their songs. I like the Fray but there are other great bands out there... There are some really neat movements right in the beginning. The synchronization is great and then she just launches herself at his back. The throw is excellent. This is one of those pieces where the judges talk a lot about trust in the partnership. They’re both right there when they need to be and it seems like they’ve been paired since the beginning instead of just this week. Very well done.

Sean says Stacey choreographed gold. He says he really saw Austin dance this week and Corynne was stunning to watch. Melissa says it was amazing. She says they lived the story and that they were emotive and in the zone. Tre says Corynne has huge potential and says she saw connection from Austin for the first time. She also mentions the trust between the two. Do I know what I’m talking about, or what? Jean Marc says he loved the conversation on the dance floor. He calls Corynne the Contemporary Queen and Austin is now Austin Power. I think these two have finally found the right partners - this was the first week I've liked what they've done and actually connected with them.

Melanie and Cody are on deck now and they’ve pulled Mambo with Gustav Vargas. There’s definitely some struggles with the tricks in rehearsals. Hopefully they can pull it together.

They’re dancing to ‘Suena Ahora’ by Michi Sarmiento. These two are just great. Really cute. They seem to have the basic movements down, a little tentative with some of the tricks. There was one trick with a pretty obvious stutter to it, but they pulled it together and cleaned it up at the end. Good show. Good show yes - but could they not have found something for Cody to wear that wasn't made for a Ft. Lauderdale senior citizen? Sheesh.

Sean says it was the cutest Mambo he’s ever seen. He says for the first time Cody wasn’t outshined by Melanie with this. He says there were nervous moments with the lifts, but their recovery was good. Melissa thinks the piece was perfect for them. They needed to get into the floor more, but overall they did a great job. Tre thought the technique was lacking a bit for her, but the energy was great. Jean Marc says the taste of it was great. He critiques the technique a bit, but says overall they did really good.

Now we’ve got Tara Jean and Everett who’ve drawn the dreaded Quick Step with Pierre Allaire. According to Pierre, there’s no story, just pure dancing.

‘Chicago Overture’ by the Hot Rolls Ragtime Band is the song selection for this piece. That first lift-y thing wasn’t terribly smooth. It looks like overall they’ve got the steps down, but there’s something just kind of...meh...about his one. I’m not sure what it is. Maybe the performance is just a little too ‘put on’ for me. 'Meh' is right.

Sean says they’re the most consistent couple in the bunch. Sean’s praying that he gets the chance to work with Tara Jean and wants Everett to stop holding back that little bit. Melissa says they are consummate professionals. She wants them to come out of their shells a bit more. Tre praises the first lift/dive thing (really? really?) and says they just keep popping. Jean Marc says they could’ve been a little more connected but they really used the space well. He says they murdered it. Huh.

Back from the commercial and Leah tells us that Jean Marc and France are choreographing tomorrow’s group number. You all may remember that Jean Marc took my suggestion for a piece last year when he choreographed a group number. I haven’t made any recommendations this season, so we’ll just have to wait and see what he comes up with on his own.

Next up is Jayme Rae and Daniel. They’ve chosen Hip Hop with Luther this week. This is the first time we’ve seen him choreograph since semi finals in Toronto. It seems very grabby.

They’re dancing to ‘Pucker Up’ by Ciara. Jayme Rae is very Lady GaGa styled. Aaaand Daniel shirtless is not a bad thing. They’re both very sharp. The performance quality with these two is always fantastic. Daniel’s totally playing it up and I love it. Yikes, there are some fairly suggestive moments in this. Their parents must be soooo pleased! Great piece. These dancers have become my favourites to watch - Jayme Rae is killer and Daniel...well...I could watch him all day. ;)

Jean Marc is fanning Tre from the hotness. Sean’s dancing in his seat saying how much he loves this show. He says these two are his favourite dancers. He loves the way Jayme Rae dances. He’s raving about her! He calls Daniel ‘chocolate love’. Hee. He says he’s smooth and a work of art. Melissa says Jayme Rae was totally Miss Thang through the piece. She says Daniel has so much to offer and totally came to Jayme Rae’s level. Tre says to Daniel ‘PUT YO PANTS BACK ON and don’t you take them off when you come walkin’ over here again!’ I rewound that three times to listen to it. She’s weaving and grunting and it’s all a good thing from her. Jean Marc says ‘WOW’. He says Daniel is a smooth criminal and for both of them, the swagger is out the wazoo. He needs to say wazoo more often. It’s all good from Jean Marc.

Nearing the end and we’ve got Nicolas and Jenna Lynn. They’ve picked the Hustle, choreographed by Benji Schwimmer, the season 2 winner of SYTYCD US. It’s the end of the world and they’re gonna dance. This looks like it’s going to be a very tricky piece.

They’re dancing to ‘Canned Heat’ by Jamiroquai. Has there ever been a SYTYCD season anywhere that didn’t use this song at some point? Jamiroquai is a secret indulgence for me...great beats, great groove, great dance tunes. Kissing right off the bat! Always a vote getter. So far the tricks look good. There are moments where Nicolas is struggling to remember where his hands go. There’s a flippy thing near the end that looked a little screwy to me. Overall, clearly a tough routine that was pretty well danced. Nicolas needs a new partner - Jenna Lynn is dragging him down IMO.

Sean says Jenna Lynn is amazing, but her partnering skills could use some work. Sean is amazed by Nicolas’ ability to pick up the choreography. Melissa says Jenna Lynn is the most dynamic female dancer in the competition, but she needs to focus more. Like Sean, she praises Nicolas' ability to pick up the choreography and his partnering skills. Tre says they obviously felt each other and made it believable. Jean Marc says it was a difficult routine that they did fantastic with.

Finally we’ve got Natalie and Danny who’ve picked the Rhumba with Gustavo Vargas this week. There’s some definite challenges for these two with this style, so hopefully they can pull it together.

They’re dancing to ‘Historia De Un Amor’ by Perez Prado. Natalie seems to have found her sensuality somewhere along the way. I don’t know anything about technique, but these two seem to do pretty well with this. It’s smooth and fluid, but overall not really exciting. There’s just something kind of missing.

Sean anticipated a disaster with this piece, but is freaking out with how not a disaster it was. He critiques a few minor technical bits and says Danny needs to believe in himself more. Melissa feels the same way about Danny. She wants him to own it. She wants Natalie to open up more, but says she rose to the challenge. Tre says it was a great attempt, but says Natalie needs to extend more. She loved Danny, but she needed more for this one. Jean Marc talks a lot of technical that I don't really grab. He says it was a good effort, but the lack of technique was pretty noticeable. He says straight out that they’re at risk.

So that’s the end for this week. Honestly, I’m not even going to hazard a guess at the bottom three here. Mostly all the dances were pretty fantastic, so I can’t even begin to pick who’s in the bottom.

Carra will be back with the results recap tomorrow as well as the recap for the first round of auditions for SYTYCD US Season 6! Let the insanity begin!

Cheers!
