I did it! I stayed home and watched the whole show and avoided any VCR mishaps!
But be warned. I am suffering the effects of a terrible cold combined with Obamamania - that pairing has left me feeling a touch delirious. And none of that had anything to do with any libations you may have imbibed on election night??
Tonight's show is just one hour and our judges are Sexy Rexy Harrington, Melissa Williams (hey - she worked with George Michael! I like that!) and our regulars Tre and JM.
Leah starts off with a recap of the prizes and a warning that two of our dancers will not be in the Top 10. And, I must say, for the entire show? Her dress kept throwing me off. I kept thinking the beige parts were see through. She needs to stop asking for the car, it's getting irritating. I imagine she's getting paid fairly well for this gig, buy your own damn Mercedes.
Not much banter, and our first couple of the night are Natalli and Francis dancing the Salsa. In the rehearsal portion, Francis complains that Natalli always has to lead. Go figure.
As usual, I miss the name of the song and artist. I seem to always miss the first one of the night. I've got 5 more weeks to work on that. However, I did catch that it was choreographed by Gustav Vargas.
Nat's all decked out in purple tassles, which keep me fairly distracted for the whole number, but there was a cool thing that ends up in the splits at the end that I found impressive. I thought some of the arm work at the end seemed off, but beyond that, I can't find anything distinctly wrong with it. I'm not moved much either way with this one. I was okay with this, but I'm finding my feelings for the individual dancers are affecting my ability to judge fairly. I don't like Natalie, so I was not as impressed with this one as I probably should have been.
Rex sends them on the Sexy Rexy Rocket into ORBIT this time, calling it scintillating... He says he felt like he was in a club in Havana smokin' a stogie. He calls Natalli out a bit by saying she needs a bit more stacatto, but tells Francis that he partnered her beautifully. Melissa says that Natalli needs to sink down into it a bit more, but calls her 'sex on wheels'. Huh. She keeps that characteristic so hidden, I'm surprised anyone would notice at all.
Tre says hot. Many times and in many languages. She liked that Natalli showed a vulnerable side by allowing Francis to lead, and says the whole thing gave her goose bumps down to her toes. I'm waiting for JM to drool over the outfit, but he doesn't get carried away with it, just says they are the cause of global warming. He really seems to be toning down the obvious, ummm, excitement that he usually experiences.
Next up - Allie and Dannie doing hip hop with Luther "Do ya Feel Me" Brown. Dancing to In the Ayer by Flo Rider w/ Will.I.Am, my first thoughts are they are waaaaay too cute for this. Man oh man, are they ever.
Allie needs to come off way more raunchy to pull this off, and she just isn't made for 'raunchy'. The whole way through I'm thinking she needs to loosen up, poor girl. Dannie kind of got lost in this one for me, and I'm not looking forward to what the judges have to say. I actually thought Allie did pretty good with this one. I wasn't expecting it to be as 'grungy' as some of the other hip hop routines, because, well, it's Allie and Danny. I was thoroughly entertained.
Yeah, me and Rex, on the same page. He says they are both way too sweet a couple for this, he needed more from them, it needed to have been hit much harder. Melissa calls them the most versatile couple on the show, but overall agrees with Rex. She does say, however, that she felt Dannie hit it with reckless abandon.
I don't think Tre gave them much to work with when she said it had flavour (check), fun (check) and feel (check)... Yeah, I guess so, if we're looking for Disney hip hop. JM calls Luther a genius and tells Allie and Dannie they were "in your own pocket"... I'm not sure, but is that kind of like being in your zone?
I'm putting them in the bottom 3 tonight. I think you may be jumping the gun on that one. They've already been established as a favourite. One off night does not a bottom 3 couple make.
Over to Miles and Lara for a little Foxtrot. Choreographed by Danny Quilliam and dancing to Summer Wind by Michael Buble... oh! What a pretty dress - love that it's tied to her fingers! I want one.
I like this one. It was very graceful and smooth. I'm not sure how I feel about Miles' arms tonight, and they both have a very fixed smile for the whole routine, but other than that, they seem to pull it off, with a very nice spin lift at the end. I really enjoyed this as well. Lara and Miles have totally grown on me, although I think Miles could be in some trouble when they start switching partners.
Rex calls it charming and beautiful, and compliments Miles on his arms and carriage. Huh. Shows what I know. Melissa says that the lines are coming along nicely, but they could work on relaxing a little bit. She says they should get the "Growth Award". That's what I said about Kaitlyn and Izaak last week.
Tre makes a comment about the fixed expressions, and suggests keeping it a bit more natural. She commends Miles on taking critiscism and working with it. JM tells them their musicality was amazing and also commends Miles for his arms and carriage.
Ha ha - Lara draws a big red 3 on Miles' abs, and they share a cute little giggle. Whaddya think... I'm thinking the chemistry maybe has spilled over in the off hours? Oh I imagine there's a little slap and tickle going on...
Yay! The jive! I love the jive! Izaak and Kaitlyn are dancing to Untouched by The Veronicas, a number choreographed by Dmitry Chaplin. Inspired song choice for this dance!
Oh dear. Right off the top, it seems Kaitlyn is marching through this. Admittedly, this is a very fast dance, but there's no bounce, no flow. It's like watching Avril Lavigne somehow, and it's just. not. working. Normally Izaak is the weak link, but tonight, not so much. He's holding his own the best he can, but nothin's gonna save this one. Yeah, I just got the sense that Kaitlyn was trying too hard with this one. Love Izaak in the skinny jeans!
Rex channels my thoughts and simply says it wasn't enough and it fell short. Melissa says it lost it's snap, crackle, pop... they weren't into the floor and the connections weren't so good.
Tre says she felt Kaitlyn tried too hard, but says it was Izaak's best performance so far. I felt his exuberance to this compliment is in poor taste considering his partner just got slammed. Tre tells him to cool it, because at this point, he's still lacking. JM says bad retractions, bad kicks and removes them from the VID list. He needs to stop saying this. Everytime he does all I can think of is that he's wishing venereal disease on them.
Bottom 3 for them, I'm thinking. I'm also thinking the last night for them as well. As much as I've liked Izaak, I think he hasn't shown the emotional growth or maturity for what this show requires, and would love to see him somewhere down the line. I completely agree.
Ahhh, my favorites. Nico and Arassay. They pull Jazz and I'm excited to see what they do - and if he's gonna wear a shirt or not. :) Nico says they are going to be "interacting in our pure sexy way" (quiver) and Arassay says "He's gonna be hot, and I'm gonna be me." Tee hee.
Paul Becker choreographs a nice sultry number to It's a Man's Man's Man's World by James Brown.
I'm sorry. I put down the pen. And I put down the notebook. And just made little sounds. Since I held myself together slightly better, I'll say this was totally hot. I think there may be something going on behind the scenes with these two also. I hope Arassay's dad doesn't find out. I get the feeling he might not be happy about it.
Rex is all over it, calling it the best number of the night. He praises their musicality and agrees with the compliment Kenny Ortega paid Nico a week or so again, about being the reason boys join dancing. Melissa says they breathe life and emotion into everything they do and assures Arassay that in no way is she dancing in Nico's shadow.
Tre calls them the leaders of the competition, that they are undeniable, unstoppable talent. JM gives them a VID lifetime membership and tells them they control the universe. "You two is all about magic..."
Side note - I've noticed the dancers are saying very little tonight - no more acceptance speeches - which tells me for the past few weeks they were encouraged to ramble on, but tonight, we're on a timeline, so shut it.
Last up are Lisa and Vincent. Lisa says dancing for your life sucks. Could her laugh be any more irritating?
Our choreographer is someone I've not seen before. Sho-Tyme. I wonder what one calls him for short... Sho? Anyway, we've got Lisa and Vincent dancing House to 100% Pure Love by Crystal Waters. I'm wondering what "House" means specifically...?
I enjoy this one. I find their timing just a little off here and there, but otherwise, a strong performance. This is another one where my personal feelings taint my feelings about the dance. Lisa is irritating, so I was meh about the whole number.
Rex says they killed it and calls it buck. Melissa says the choreography was sick and that it looked like they were on rollerskates, their footwork was so good. It's her favourite of the night.
Thank you Tre. "House" is street dancing, jazz and disco, all wrapped into the footwork. It's jacking and lofting and whacking as well. THAT'S what I THOUGHT it was ... jacking and lofting and whacking! JM jumps up and does a strange little dance, apparently in tribute to Sho. He sits down and tells them they had great connection and then says something about Realtors, and Houses on fire... get it? Cuz they danced House.
And there we have it. To recap my thoughts, Natalli/Francis, Dannie/Allie and Kaitlyn/Izaak could well be dancing for their lives this week, and should that happen, I predict farewell numbers for both Kaitlyn and Izaak. I agree with the Kaitlyn/Izaak and Natalli/Francis assessments, but I think Danny/Allie have been favourites for too long to end up in the bottom. I'm not sure who I think the third couple will be, but, regardless, I think it's a lock for Kaitlyn and Izaak to say goodbye.
And yay me again tonight! I voted. :)
Watch for Kim's comments and a recap of the results also done by Kim tomorrow night... I'm off for somemore cold meds, and a bit more CNN, cuz I haven't seen anything on Obama for several hours now...
